Students walk down memory lane - COLLEGE CAMPUS

The department of library and information science of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, held its first alumni meet and two-day seminar at the PG council conference hall of the varsity on February 14 and 15. While the alumni meet was held in the first half in which more than 200 former students of the department had joined and shared their views on various topics, the seminar was inaugurated in the afternoon by vice-chancellor Ashok Kumar Das.

The topic of the seminar was 'Library Development in Odisha: Past, Present and Future'. Pitambar Padhi, president of the alumni association, presided over the inaugural function. Puspanjali Jena, head of the department, and organising secretary of the seminar gave the inaugural speech. Five distinguished alumni were felicitated on this occasion for their contribution towards development of library and information science.

Vice-chancellor stressed the need for modernisation of the departmental libraries and the university library. As many as 24 research papers were presented on various subjects on the second day.

DRIEMS sports meet

The management wing of the DRIEMS (Dhaneswar Rath Institute of Engineering and Management Studies) organised ' Josh-E-Raftaar', a two-day annual sports meet in the institute's sports complex at Tangi from February 12 to 14. The students had participated in several outdoor games, including athletics, cricket, musical chair and quiz competitions. A voluntary blood donation camp was also held in the college on February 13. Over 181 units of blood were collected in the camp.

Movie time

Students of Silicon Institute of Technology (SIT) and Institute of Technical Education and Research (ITER) watched young filmmaker Dilshad Ayudi's film French Cut last week.

A large number of students were present at the screenings. The film is about a boy and a girl and the turmoil they undergo after the boy fell in love with another girl.

The film was also launched on YouTube on Valentine's Day. Students said they could connect with the story and enjoyed it a lot. 'We also face such situation in our life and the movie portrayed it well,' said a student.

Annual day celebrations

The postgraduate department of English in Khallikote Autonomous College observed its annual day at the Ganesh conference hall on Monday. Chineswar Rao, retired reader of the department, was the chief guest on the function.

He appealed to the faculty members to get inspiration from Ram Krushna Paramahansha and create disciple such as Vivekananda.

Former vice-chancellor of Berhampur University Harihar Das, principal of Khallikote Autonomous College Radhanath Rath, head of the department Rachana Padhi also graced the occasion. Chineswar Rao was felicitated on the occasion.

Techno fest at VSSUT

The annual techno management festival of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology 'Samavesh -2K15' was organised on the college campus at Burla last week. Students from several institutions participated in the festival. Several fun events and cultural programmes were organised during the three-day festival, which began on February 13 and concluded on February 15. This year, the team Samavesh organised 26 different events that included technical, management, science exhibition and gaming events. A robotics competition was also organised during the festival. The robotics' society of the university staged events such as Devil's Valley and Warz-O-Bot. The musical club of the university also performed during this occasion. The winners were felicitated on the concluding day.

Utkal plans grand show

The students' union of Utkal University organised its annual day on February 19 on the varsity campus. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik will address them for the first time on a students' union function. The event will be conducted at the old convocation ground of the varsity. From cleaning the grounds to preparing for the cultural programme, the students are leaving no stone unturned to make it a grand one. President of the students' union Rajeshraj Swain said they would make the function a successful event.

Industrial tour

The final year MBA students of Rourkela Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) went on a one-day industrial tour to the factory of OCL India Limited at Rajgangpur.

The visit was aimed at gaining knowledge on various aspect of production distribution and other things. Thirty students visited the factory. The team was led by S.K. Biswal from the department of marketing.

Two officials from HR department - Pratap Sahu and Bibhor Prasad -accompanied the team. The students gained first-hand experience about the functioning of several units and business aspects such as production, logistics, HR, marketing, finance, safety, CSR and other things. The tour lasted for more than seven hours.

Cultural fest

Students of Modern Engineering and Management Studies, Balasore, took part in a fest organised on the college campus last week. They also got an opportunity to listen to various speakers who inspired them through their thought provoking speeches. Speakers highlighted the need for science and technology in today's world. The district collector, Sanatan Mallick, the additional director of integrated test range Binay Das, NIT Agartala professor Umesh Mishra, chairman of the college Himansu Das and the principal of the college, Haraprasad Panda, addressed the student. Winners of various competitions were felicitated on the occasion.
