Berhampur: Hundred student-traffic volunteers were deployed at various busy junctions in the city on Tuesday to assist the traffic cops.

"We have trained the volunteers properly, and they will be deployed for three hours in four shifts from 9am to 9pm according to their choice considering the leisure period and classes," said deputy inspector of police in-charge (traffic) Nirad Palei.

These students are deployed under the Students Traffic Volunteers Scholarship Scheme and will be paid Rs 100 daily for assisting the police in regulating traffic.

They were deployed at Gate Bazar, Courtpeta, Kamapalli, Tata Benz, PVN Rao Petrol Pump squares and other places. The cops selected the students from five colleges, including the Khallikote College, Sashi Bhushan Rath Women's College, Mahamayee Women's College, City College and the Binayak Acharya College.

"We have charted out four shifts from 9am to 12pm, 12pm to 3pm, 3pm to 6pm and 6pm to 9pm - which would be followed every day. We deployed 32 students in the first shift, 13 in second, 12 in third and 43 in the fourth shift on Tuesday. We provided them one uniform each (blue pants and blue T-shirt with the emblem of Odisha police and embossing of Berhampur Traffic Police and Students Traffic Volunteers Scholarship Scheme on it), an identity card mentioning their name, college name, the class in which he or she is studying and a cap to protect themselves from the sunlight," said Palei.

Most of the student-volunteers, who have been deployed in the traffic management, are happy with their new job. "During practical training, I was worried about standing under the sun for three hours. But when I performed my duty at Courtpeta Square, I was surprised how quickly the time passed," said Sunil Sahu, a student.
