
Members of Ravenshaw University social service guild have launched a special campaign to create awareness about jaundice in the city. Cuttack has become the latest entrant into the list of heavily affected places. Students, who are concerned over the jaundice outbreak here, decided to provide their help in controlling the disease as the administration failed to act properly.
The students have been visiting several localities in and around Cuttack, where jaundice cases have been reported in the last month. Apart from creating awareness on safe water consumption, the SSG members are distributing halogen tablets, bleaching powder and ORS (oral re-hydration solution) packets in the affected areas. The objective of such an initiative is to educate people on keeping their surroundings clean and drinking boiled water.
HR roundtable
A human resource (HR) roundtable on the topic — Emerging Challenges in Employee Relations — was organised by International Management Institute (IMI), Bhubaneswar, on February 28, in association with national human resource development network, Bhubaneswar chapter. The students of the institute enjoyed listening to the eminent speakers who shared their experiences. The students said that these would help them to step out into the corporate sector in future. In the inaugural session, IMI director Ramesh Behl said that good employee relations in business and industry were important to attain its objectives.
Tech festival
Tech-excellence, the two-day technical festival of Hi-Tech Engineering College, Bhubaneswar, was held on March 2 and 3 on the college campus. Over 300 students from various technical and engineering colleges in the state had taken part in different events organised there. As many as 16 different events were held at the event involving the technology oriented subjects. Besides, Tech-ception, the annual technological magazine, was unveiled on this occasion. Attending the event, Odisha Science Academy head Umacharan Mohanty said that the students should resort to innovation and invention oriented scientific activities.
Quiz contest
Omkar A. and Abhinav D. from Kalinga Institute of Information Technology (KIIT) won of the regional round of Tata Crucible campus quiz-2015, Bhubaneswar zone, last week. Omkar and Abhinav will compete with the winners from other cities in the zone-2 finals in Calcutta on March 15. Sangram K. and Rashmi R. from college of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry were declared runners-up.
One of the organisers said it was the 11th edition of the quiz. After traversing 34 cities in the country, the quiz contest concluded its city rounds in Bhubaneswar.
Students from several colleges across the city took part in the Bhubaneswar round. Top six teams were selected after a preliminary written and a wildcard round.
RIMS farewell
Final year undergraduate students of Rourkela Institute of Management Studies (RIMS) received their farewell. Students of all streams, including bachelor in business administration (BBA), bachelor in computer application (BCA), and bachelor in journalism and mass communication (BJMC), took part in the farewell programme. The event was held on Tuesday evening. The college teachers delivered speeches on this occasion and motivated the students. The students held cultural events to entertain the gathering. This was followed by different games. Finally all the students took the stage for a DJ night, which was followed by dinner. Prior to this farewell programme, the third year BBA students of the institute had taken part in an industrial tour as part of their curriculum last week. As many as 36 students visited the OCL India LTD factory premises.
Dance award
Students of the Central University of Odisha, Koraput, bagged the fourth prize in tribal dance category at the Inter-University National Youth Festival-2015. They performed a form of Dhemsa, a tribal dance form of the Koraput region. Besides, the student contingent from this university stood first in the marching drill at the opening programme of the festival that was held at Devi Ahilya University in Indore. The varsity authorities felicitated the students in a formal ceremony last week.
The varsity had sent ten students and five local musicians to participate in the festival. Around 3,000 participants from 85 universities took part in the festival. The festival is organised under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and sponsored by of central youth affairs and sports ministry. It focuses on cultural aspects and a holds number of other programmes, which reflects the spirit of friendship, peace and development.
Annual event
Kuntala Kumari Sabat (KKS) Women’s College science society held its annual social event on Thursday. The speakers, who attended the event, encouraged the students to develop scientific temperament. They praised the students for taking up science, as its need is felt in every aspect of the life. Head of bio-science and bio-technology of FM University Bishnu Prasad Dash said the students should pursue further research in their preferred subjects and works should be done keeping the welfare, growth and development of the society in mind. KKS Women’s College principal Jayanti Pal also praised the college’s achievement in science and appreciated the students’ participation in science projects that brought laurels for the college. Prizes were distributed among successful students and cultural shows were also presented.
Talent show
The annual event of the women’s hostel of the Gangadhar Meher (Autonomous) College was organised last week. The college students showcased their talents in different sectors including literary, culture and sports. The hostel boarders organised several cultural shows. A meeting was also organised during the occasion. Former principal of Government Women’s College Santosh Dash attended the occasion as the chief guest and said the women students should pursue higher studies and become self-sufficient. The students, who had excelled in several competitions organised before the event, were also given prizes.
Busy schedule
Students and faculty members of Utkal University had been busy for the last 15 days, as they organised one event after another. The students’ union held its annual festival and managed to bring chief minister Naveen Patnaik to the varsity campus. The annual convocation was held there after.
The scholars and research scientists were provided with degrees in the event that was attended by Odisha governor S.C. Jamir. Besides, the Anthropology Congress was also held in the anthropology department where students, scholars and teaching staff from across the country were present.
