Rourkela/Sambalpur: Hundreds of school and college students on Monday joined a rally in Rourkela to demand a CBI probe into the death of Shreyash Kesherwani, who died allegedly after being ragged by fellow students in Andhra Pradesh.

The deceased's father, Sailesh, also joined the march.

Students of Gangadhar Meher University staged a silent dharna in front of the varsity's main gate on Sunday night to demand action against the guilty students.

They lit candles in front of a portrait of Shreyas and urged the state government to direct their Andhra counterparts to arrest the culprits and authorities of the Sri Chaitanya college, where the Garposh native was studying. He died in a Bhubaneswar hospital on January 7.

An Andhra police team, led by PM Palem police station circle inspector K. Laxman Murty, visited Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela, where Shreyas was admitted for treatment. They met the hospital director K.C. Mahanta and ICU in-charge R.B. Patnaik and enquired about the student's condition and the treatment provided to him.

The team also visited Garposh and spoke to his parents. They recorded the statement and assured them of action. The cops received the post-mortem report from Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar. The report has highlighted physical and internal injuries, the police said.

The deceased's father told the reporters that he was not happy with the way the case was being handled by the police. Raising a question over the inquiry process, he said: "I am sure I will not get justice if the case is handled by the state police. I want the CBI to conduct the investigation. There have been no arrests so far. That shows the intention of the police."
