Bhubaneswar: Police will keep tabs on criminals in and around popular spots ahead of the picnic season that begins next month.

The police said precautionary measures would be taken to prevent crimes against women.

Picnic spots such as the botanical garden, Jayadev Vatika, Sikharchandi, Jhumka and Deras and Dhauli would be a priority as these spots attract thousands of tourists during the winter.

"The police stations concerned have been asked to frequently send police control room vans during the day. The police stations have also been directed to crack down against public drinking and take stringent action against those creating nuisance," said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.

Sources said the popular spots such as Jayadev Vatika, Sikharchandi and Dhauli had gained notoriety because of tourist harassment. "Often drunk local youths harass couples, who visit these spots. There are instances in which they have fleeced money from couples," said a police officer.

The Deras and Jhumka dams in the Chandaka sanctuary is an isolated place, allowing a free run to criminals. "Victims are reluctant to lodge complaints, but we urge them to report such matters. They can post their grievances on our Facebook page or Twitter handle," said a police officer.
