Bhubaneswar, April 4: The commissionerate police will soon have three more police stations.

While construction of the proposed model police station at Tamando on the city outskirts has been completed, two more police stations are in the pipeline. They would be set up at Dhauli and near the airport.

Twin city police commissioner B.K. Sharma said construction of the model police station at Tamando has been finished. “The process of installation of close circuit television (CCTV) cameras is on. This will be finished in 15 days and we hope the police station will be inaugurated soon,” said Sharma. The model police station has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.48 crore and the Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation has been entrusted with the construction work.

The new police station is three storey and stands on a one-acre plot. It has a system room to control all activities, a conference hall, a counselling room, an interrogation room, barracks and other facilities which are not found in other police stations of the state. The CCTV cameras would be installed at all places and a custody officer would be in charge of the system room.

“Tamando police station will be the biggest one in the state. Unlike other police stations that lack basic facilities, this model police station will have everything. The lockups here will have better facilities unlike those found in other police stations,” said the police commissioner adding that there would a separate interrogation room.

Situated by the NH-5, the police station has four sentry posts on its roof where armed cops would keep vigil. The police station would be fortified like those in Maoist-hit areas.

Residents of Tamando feel this police station will help prevent crimes and boost security in their area. “Crimes such as theft, burglary and highway robbery are frequent in this area,” said Anil Balbantray, a local resident.

The commissioner said that to tackle the growing number of urban crimes, such police stations were necessary.

Sources said the state government had already provided half an acre of land at Dhauli for the police station. Besides, the Airport Authority of India has earmarked 5,000sqft inside the airport for the police station. “The government has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh each for the construction of these two police stations. Work will start very soon,” said Sharma.

At present, the Bhuban-eswar urban police district of the commissionerate police has 20 police stations including a traffic police station and an energy police station. While Tamando police station would help the people in that area, the Dhauli police station will reduce pressure on Lingaraj and Balianta police stations. The Airport police station will focus on the airport and Navin Niwas and share the pressure of Airfield police station.
