Bhubaneswar, June 1: Young classical dancers will get their opportunity to find out how well they have mastered the dance form in annual talent hunt Naveen Kalakar, which is scheduled to begin on June 4.
The one-of-its-kind event will see promising talents perform before veteran dancers who will be their judge.
Though most participants at the eighth edition of the dance symposium belong to Odissi, there would also be performances in other Indian classical dance forms such as Mohini Attam, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Sattriya and Kathak.
At the four-day-long event, the morning session will be dedicated to young Odissi artistes every day. These dancers, trained by known names such as Kumkum Mohanty, Durga Charan Ranbir and senior artistes such as Aloka Kanungo, Rupashree Mohapatra, Pitambar Biswal, Sonali Mohapatra and Dona Ganguly, will present solo acts to be given scores by a team of veteran Odissi dancers.
Artistes who score more than 75 per cent in the categories of senior and junior Odissi dance will be given a certificate and the titles of Odissi Jyoti and Odissi Shri respectively. For dance forms other than Odissi, the performers will be given the titles Nrutya Jyoti on scoring well. These dancers will perform during the evening sessions.
Dancers from Kerala, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Calcutta, Pune, Andhra Pradesh, Imphal, Guwahati and from places as far as West Indies, Sri Lanka and Poland will take part in the event.
Also, one artiste each from every Indian classical dance form has been chosen to be felicitated with the Sri Jayadev Rashtriya Yuva Pratibha Puraskar for making a mark with their art.
These include Vidha Lal (Kathak), Swapna Rajendrakumar (Mohini Attam), Jyotsna Jagannathan (Bharatnatyam), Shreelakshmi Govardhan (Kuchipudi), Sinam Basu Singh (Manipuri), Anwesa Mahanta (Sattriya), Debasish Patnaik (Odissi) and Gayathri Subramaniam (Kerala Natanam).
