Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who played the role of a hockey coach in Chak De! India, will attend the opening ceremony of the Men’s Hockey World Cup on November 27.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik tweeted the announcement on Tuesday.

“Delighted to share that @iamsrk 's #HeartBeatsForHockey and he has come forward to support Indian hockey & #HockeyWorldCup2018 in #Bhubaneswar. Kalinga Stadium & #Odisha look forward to welcoming you, Mr. Khan at the #OdishaHWCOpeningCeremony on 27th November 2018 #AbBasHockey,” Naveen tweeted.

Sports department officials said that Khan would perform during the opening ceremony.

Earlier, the state government has roped in Grammy and Oscar winning music composer A.R Rahman to curate the official song for the world cup.

Bollywood lyricist Gulzar has been drafted to pen the lyrics of the track titled Jai Hind Hind, Jai India.

The mascot for the tournament Olly was on Tuesday launched on Puri sea beach.

Olly, which represents the endangered olive ridley turtle, also participated in a photo session with hockey lovers on the beach.

“This is going to be one of the biggest sporting events in the state’s history. We are making all plans to make the event successful. The publicity campaign for the tournament will be intensified to attract maximum visitors. We will also showcase the rich culture and tourist destinations through the tournament,” said sports minister Chandra Sarathi Behera.

Cyclonic Titli, however, threatens to play spoilsport for the inauguration ceremony of the renovated hockey stadium on Wednesday.

An exhibition match between two sides led by former Team India captains Dilip Tirkey and Dhanraj Pillay will be played after the inauguration ceremony.

Several former and present Indian players, including Sardar Singh, Prabhjot Singh, Jugraj Singh, Viren Rashquinha, P.R. Sreejesh and Mandeep Singh, will take part in the exhibition match.
