Bhubaneswar, July 11: Twin cities police have proposed to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to construct two speed breakers in front of Utkal University on the approach road to the flyover.

Motorists, including students, have been taking a wrong turn to reach the varsity ever since the Vani Vihar flyover was opened to the public in April 2014.

Though students and others visiting the university should cover the distance between Vani Vihar and Acarya Vihar and take a U-turn from Acharya Vihar to reach the varsity, most of them are taking a wrong turn at Vani Vihar as it reduces the distance by two kilometres. "One has to travel an additional distance of around 2km to reach the university by taking the U-turn at Acharya Vihar. Besides, traffic remains heavy on both the approach roads near the flyover. Although it is a bit risky as vehicles come at reasonable speed from the Acharya Vihar end, we have been taking a wrong turn to save time," said Abinash, a university student.

While an underpass has been made functional near Sani Temple for university students, motorists can be spotted driving the wrong way to reach the university. Traffic personnel said students had been ignoring their directions not to do so.

"Two traffic men are deployed to manage the traffic at the square. But, students have been defying our directions and continue to drive in the wrong direction. If we start enforcing traffic rules at the square, it will create a law and order problem," said a traffic cop at the square.

Saheed Nagar police station inspector in charge Kishore Mund said they had asked the NHAI to construct two speed-breakers as a precautionary measure.

"Although a road accident has not taken place so far, just one is enough to create a serious law and order situation at the university. So, we have asked the NHAI to build two speed breakers to slow down vehicles coming from Achar-ya Vihar end," said Mund.

An NHAI official said they would shortly visit the spot to take a stock of traffic at the square. "We will construct the speed breakers within a month. Besides, we also plan to come up with alternative arrangements to prevent motorists from driving in the wrong direction," he said.
