Sonepur: A 19-year-old from the district has overcome challenges of absence of infrastructure and coaching to take part in the most prestigious taekwondo competition in the world. On the way, Ehsas Hota becomes the only sportsperson from the state to take part in the competition.

Hota is part of a 60-strong Indian contingent that is taking part in the World Taekwondo Championship that began at Rupandehi in Nepal from Friday. Hota's success is remarkable considering taekwondo, a Korean martial art form, is not popular in this part of the country. Before departing for Nepal, Hota said he had lot of dreams and was excited to take part in the world event. He also said winning medals was not his only aim. "It is always a great feeling, especially when you are representing your country in a world event. It provides a platform for you not only to perform, but also to learn from others. I feel honoured," he said.

The Birmaharajpur teen, who will take part in the 54kg category event, said winning medals was not his only aim. "It doesn't matter whether I win medals or not. I want to do something for my people and my home. This experience will come in handy." He has already set up the Ehsas Martial Arts Academy at Birmaharajpur to train people in self-defence. Around 150 persons train in martial art forms such as karate, taekwondo, boxing at the centre.

Last December, he had taken part in the All-India Taekwondo Championship at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, where he won two gold medals to secure a berth in the world championship.

The Plus Three student is a multifaceted talent. He has taken part at national-level events such as Science Olympiads, debates, karate, boxing and track and field events.

Namita, his mother, is hopeful about him doing well in Nepal. "He will definitely win gold and make us proud. He will remain an inspiration for youngsters in the area," she said.

Sonepur District Taekwondo Association president Rabindra Kumar Hota (no relation) said Hota's success would inspire many from the area to take up the martial art form.

He told The Telegraph: "Being a very small town, Birmaharajpur lacks basic infrastructure and amenities and that comes in the way of budding talents. He has come a long way despite such adversities. There is no dearth of talent in the area. But they need a little bit of guidance and grooming."
