Smuggled gold seized at airport

Customs officials at Biju Patnaik International Airport here recovered smuggled gold ornaments worth more than Rs 9 lakh from a passenger coming from Bangkok on Saturday.

Bhubaneswar: Customs officials at Biju Patnaik International Airport here recovered smuggled gold ornaments worth more than Rs 9 lakh from a passenger coming from Bangkok on Saturday.

This is fifth seizure of gold in the past one month at the airport that had earned the international tag five years ago.

Sources said acting on a tip-off, the customs officials detained a passenger from Bangkok, who have arrived on the Air India flight AI-339. After conducting a search, nearly 305grams of gold was found on the person, who is from Bangalore.

The airport's assistant commissioner of customs Ranjan Kumar Chowdhury said the seized ornaments were being sought to be smuggled into the country.

On Wednesday night, the airport officials had seized 15 gold bars weighing 1,143 grams from two passengers.
