Bhubaneswar, Aug. 27: Infighting within the Odisha unit BJP surfaced today with the party’s legislature wing head K.V. Singhdeo resigning from his post a day before the commencement of the monsoon session of the state Assembly.
Singhdeo’s resignation is fallout of the tussle between the party’s organisational structure and legislative wing.
In his resignation letter to the Odisha unit BJP president Jual Oram, he urged the latter to immediately accept his resignation and communicate his decision to the Speaker of the Odisha Assembly.
He told The Telegraph: “As the party president (Jual Oram) has lost his confidence and faith on me, I have decided to tender my resignation.”
Singhdeo, on being asked to elaborate the reasons of his resignation, said: “Intra-party matters should be discussed in party fora and not in the media.”
Interestingly, all other five legislators, including an associate member, met at Singhdeo’s residence and held the BJP legislature party meeting.
Oram, confirmed that he had received Singhdeo’s resignation letter, but denied having any differences with Singhdeo. “The central leadership will take a decision on his resignation,” said Oram.
Oram was expecting the MLAs to be present at the party office to conduct the formal legislature party meeting and chalk out the party’s strategy for the monsoon session.
In fact, during the day, he along with another office-bearer had made a trip to Singhdeo’s residence to dissuade him from taking the step. But Singhdeo was not present at his official residence.
BJP MLA and legislature party secretary Karendra Majhi said: “All the six MLAs today met at Singhdeo’s house and discussed the party’s strategy for the Assembly session. We will raise the issue relating to Polavaram, the coal block allocation scam and collapse of ash pond at Hirakud.”
When asked whether he is likely to join the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Singhdeo told The Telegraph: “There is no question of joining the BJD. If BJP makes an alliance with the BJD, I will quit politics.”
