Bhubaneswar, Sept. 20: Intermittent rain triggered by a low pressure has worsened the flood situation in Malkangiri with several areas of the district remaining cut-off from road service.

Many houses at Pangam remained waterlogged due to heavy rain. Road communication from Jeypore, Kalimela and Balimela to Malkangiri district headquarters town has been disrupted as rainwater was flowing on the MV 11 Bridge.

Water level in the Poteru and other rivers is also increasing. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today asked four district collectors to file reports about losses within a week.

Rain continued to lash several parts of the state due to the low pressure formed over north Andaman Sea and its adjoining areas. Talcher received 72mm rainfall, while Balangir recorded 53mm rainfall. Similarly, Puri and Cuttack received a rainfall of 50mm and 48mm, respectively, today.

Met officials forecast that heavy rainfall would occur at one or two places over interior and coastal part of the state in the next two days. It has also warned that strong wind would prevail along and off the state cost. Fishermen have been advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea.

Several localities in Cuttack were waterlogged following heavy rain this afternoon. Most of the low-lying areas had remained waterlogged in the one-and-a-half-hour shower, which started around 3pm. The rain has exposed the civic body's preparedness to deal with waterlogging in wake of the heavy rain forecast.

However, officials claimed that adequate measures were undertaken to ensure that the main storm water channels had enough space to carry the excess rainwater.

"We had made six out of the 12 Volvo pumps operational to generate more space for fast clearance of rainwater," said city engineer Umakant Gadnayak.
