Bhubaneswar, July 9: A tribal outfit today flayed the state government’s decision to hold gram sabhas in only 12 villages in the Niyamgiri hill.
The outfit — Niyamgiri Surakshya Samiti — pledged to organise these meetings in all the 112 villages of the area.
The gram sabhas are to be held in tune with a Supreme Court order to decide the fate of a bauxite-mining project.
Samiti president Kumuti Majhi said: “We condemn the government’s decision. We will organise parallel gram sabhas in the mining area to solicit people’s views on the proposed mining in the Niyamgiri hills.”
As per the April 18 Supreme Court decision, the gram sabhas will take a call on whether mining will be allowed in the Niyamgiri hills or not. The mining was proposed by the Odisha Mining Corporation and the Vedanta Group to feed the latter’s one million tonne alumina refinery in Niyamgiri.
