Bhubaneswar: Safety lessons being provided to people as part of Road Safety Week here are making lesser impact with rampant violations, especially in case of wearing helmets or fastening seat belts.

Commuters can be spotted on bikes without helmets and driving cars without fastening seat belts with traffic personnel as mute spectators.

"It is a police duty. The violators, on the other hand, should understand that riding without helmets or driving without seat belts may invite trouble for them," said social worker Alok Kar.

According to data available with the home department, the police have fined 70,000 violators across Odisha between January and March for violations related to helmets and seat belts. "We are conducting regular checks on such violations, but it is not possible to catch everyone at all times," said a traffic police deployed at Sriya Square.

Besides dotting city skylines with banners and posters that read "don't ride without helmets and seat belts", the administration had earlier made attempts to implement the "no helmet no petrol" rule, but in vain.

"The police have told us not to give petrol to those who don't wear helmets and fasten seat belts. We did put posters to make people aware. Initially, they did follow, but now the fear has gone.," said Manjit Singh, a filling station owner on Janpath.

Regional transport officer, Bhubaneswar-II, S.K. Behera said: "The risk of death is almost double for riders without helmets. It is on the people to be aware of their safety."

The police on Saturday launched a year-long campaign on five golden rules of road safety - wearing helmet, fastening seat belt, stop using mobile while driving and say no to drunk and speed driving.
