Berhampur, Oct. 13: Rushikulya and Badanadi rivers in Ganjam and Vansadhara in Gajapati district are in spate due to the incessant rain after cyclone Hudhud’s landfall on the Odisha coast on Sunday.
According to the office of the superintendent engineer (irrigation) of Berhampur, Rushikulya is flowing near the danger level at Sorada and Aska and has crossed the danger level at Vansadhara at Kasinagar.
Rushikulya is flowing at 81.13 metres at Sorada against the danger level of 81.99 metres and at 32.35 metres at Aska against the danger level of 34.75 metres. Similarly, river Vansadhara is flowing at 55.08 metres at Kasinagar in Gajapati district as against the danger level of 54.60 metres.
Most of the areas in Ganjam experienced heavy rain since Sunday. Ghodahada dam experienced 345 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours.
The district administration has also geared up to tackle the flood situation in Ganjam.
The district agriculture department has estimated that standing crop of less than 20 per cent may have been damaged in the cyclonic storm.
“Paddy crop in 20,000 hectares out of a coverage area of 2,23,500 hectares and non-paddy crops in 80,000 hectares out of 1.85 lakh hectares coverage area may have got damaged,” said Sudarshan Mohanty, the deputy director of agriculture of Ganjam. However, the actual amount of damage can be ascertained only after the harvesting of crops, he said.
“The situation is gradually becoming normal. There is no major damage to property in our district. Residents who shifted to various shelter centres were asked to return to their respective houses by evening on Monday.
Classes in the schools and colleges of Ganjam district, which were suspended on Saturday and Monday due to Hudhud, would reopen on Tuesday,” the collector said.
Fishermen who have not ventured into the sea for the last few days are observing the condition of the sea and whether it is conducive to fishing.
