Cuttack, Feb. 4: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked for records from the Angul police chief following the outrage over the alleged custody death of a 22-year-old person.

Sanjay Dehury of Ugi village had died in the Jarapada police station lock-up in Angul district on January 1. He was arrested the day before for assaulting a neighbour.

The death had triggered public outrage. Local residents had staged road blockades and gheraoed the police station demanding action against the cops responsible for the death and compensation for Dehury’s family.

Protestors burnt a number of police vehicles and also set on fire an old building of the police station.

The inspector in charge of the police station, an assistant sub-inspector and a constable were suspended following public pressure. The police, however, claimed that it was a case of suicide.

The issue of the custodial death reached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with the filing of a petition by the Odisha-based India Media Centre.
