Bhubaneswar, Sept. 5: Residents of Nuagaon on the outskirts of the city have decided to intensify their agitation for renovation of a road that connects National Highway No. 203 to the banks of the Daya river. More than 1 lakh residents are dependent on the road.
“We had launched an agitation on Local Self Government Day and given a memorandum to the civic administration. A senior police officer assured us that our grievances would be conveyed to civic authorities concerned,’’ said Rashmi Mohapatra, convenor of Ekamra Bikash Manch (EBM).
Batakrushna Moharana, a local businessman from Nuagaon, said: “More than 10 persons have been injured in the past two months while crossing this dangerous road as it is full of potholes.”
“We have demanded that the road work be completed within a month and if there is any deviation then we will intensify the agitation,’’ Mohapatra said. Contacted, mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said that one part of the road falls in BMC area and the other under block administration. “We had laid asphalt on the road that falls within the BMC limits but as the rest was under the block area, we had sought permission from the authorities concerned to transfer the land to BMC. The block authorities transferred the land to us recently and we have already floated a tender of Rs 20 lakh to lay asphalt on the remainder of the road. After the rainy season perhaps the contractor will work.”
