Bhubaneswar, March 18: Kalahandi police today confirmed that one of the three villagers abducted by Maoists from Karlapat was killed by the rebels.

The two others were released unhurt. Banamali Naik's body was found today in front of his house.

Kalahandi police superintendent Brijesh Ray said: "The Maoists killed one of the villagers, suspecting him to be a police informer. But, we never take the villagers' help. The rebels are desperate to spread their networks in the district."

The other two villagers, Sudarsan Naik, the deceased's brother, and Hari Pradhani, were released. "We will interrogate the duo to find out how they were kidnapped," said a senior police officer.

Sources said the police would quiz the two villagers to know where they had been taken to and what the rebels had questioned them. In another development, the Maoists pasted posters demanding that the police force should be withdrawn from the Niyamgiri hills. The hills, known for its bauxite deposits, will not be given for industrial purpose, they warned.
