Bhubaneswar, Jan. 6: Close on the heels of Akash Das getting involved in a brawl, another Oriya film actor Tanmay Mohanty alias Babusan has landed in a controversy following an altercation outside a five-star hotel here.

The Nayapalli police have registered a case against the actor who alongwith three of his friends allegedly beat up a youth near the hotel in the Jaydev Vihar area last night.

Moreover, they allegedly stole the mobile phone of the 19-year-old youth, Ankit Das.

The police registered a case against Babusan and his friends under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 379 (theft) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Babusan, the son of star couple Uttam and Aparajita Mohanty, is yet to be arrested.

According to Das, he was set upon by the actor and his friends without any provocation while he was talking to one of his friends over his mobile phone in front of the hotel.

“I was telling my friend over phone that I could not draw money from the ATM. When I turned around I found Babusan and his friends standing near my motorcycle. Before I could say anything the actor punched me on my nose. When I asked why they were beating me, they said that I had scolded them. I told them that I didn’t even know them but they did not listen,” said Das who lives with his relatives in the Shailashree Vihar area.

Das also added that the actor and his friends fled the spot taking his mobile phone with them.

With a bleeding nose Das then called one of his friends, who took him to the Nayapalli police station. Later, the police took him to hospital.

“On hearing my scream the hotel security guards rushed to help me. I then called my friend from a local phone booth and he took me to the police station,” said Das.

Police said they had been to the house of the actor but he was not there. His mobile phone was also switched off. Uttam Mohanty, Babusan’s father, denied the allegation that his son had assaulted anyone. He said that there was only a verbal exchange and scuffle between his son and the youth following which Das allegedly passed taunting remarks at Babusan.

“Last night, my son narrated the incident to me. He said he had not beaten the youth,” said the actor who also denied allegations of theft. “My son has three mobile phones. Why would he steal someone else’s phone,’ asked Mohanty. He said Babusan had gone to Puri on a planned trip. Sources said a mutual compromise between the two sides was likely to be worked out.

Last month, actor Akash Das Nayak had been detained for a night in the Nayapalli police station for allegedly beating a youth in front of the same hotel. He was released on a bail bond.
