Cuttack, July 10: Ravenshaw University authorities are trying to prepare a ‘database’ of students to facilitate quality assessment in the future.
Varsity sources said data inputs about students have been received during the online admission process which is moving at a brisk pace.
“The university usually receives huge data inputs on students during admissions. This time, efforts are on to maintain the database of students, which will be helpful in a number of ways,” said vice-chancellor Devdas Chhotray.
Ravenshaw University, which came into existence on November 15, 2006, was an upgrade of Ravenshaw College established in 1868.
The university has 27 departments, of which 20 are postgraduate courses. MPhil programme is available in 14 departments and all subjects have provision for PhD and D.Litt programmes.
During admissions, records about the students, subjects and in which year they have taken admissions are usually maintained by the departments.
This time, apart from the names of individual students, their email IDs, cell phone numbers, local address and any changes thereof will be maintained and subsequently digitised. Each department has also been advised to maintain such database which apart from usual academic information should also record the information about the student whether he is a hostel boarder or a day-scholar and whether the accommodation is private or rental. “The need for creation and maintenance of such database was felt as it sometimes becomes difficult to track students after the completion of their respective courses from the varsity,” the vice-chancellor said.
Hence the departments have been instructed to maintain the details of students, including where they are moving for higher studies or employment after passing out from the varsity. The process of creation and maintenance of database is still in the pipeline. Efforts are on to collect information from students passing out from the university.
“Ravenshaw University has a strong base of 6,000 students. The database will certainly help to ascertain students’ representation including male, female, SC, ST and foreigners. This will also help in quality assessment during campus selection drives, various competitions at national level and so on,” said dean of students’ welfare Partha Sarathi Mishra.
Sources said a form with details such as name, permanent address, email ID, parents’ name, year of admission, year of passing out, subject, result, future course of action such as higher studies or employment has been prepared for students’ information.
