Cuttack, Sept. 13: Ravenshaw University authorities have decided to introduce a system of ‘vehicle pass’ for students and staff to check the entry of outsiders and enforce discipline on the campus.

Last evening, a few students of the university had a close shave when a speeding motorcycle rammed into the wall of the Heritage Hall corridor. The second-year journalism and mass communication student was riding the motorcycle in the corridor with two outsiders as pillion riders.

Varsity officials, however, said that vehicle pass system had nothing to do with yesterday’s incident, but was intended to check rising incidents of clashes between students and non-students on campus.

All students as well as teaching and non-teaching staff members have been asked to furnish the vehicle numbers and ownership proof for preparing the vehicle pass. Around 8,000 students are studying at Ravenshaw of which nearly 60 per cent come in their own vehicles.

Varsity officials have also started distributing identity cards to students to ensure that discipline in maintained on the campus.

Sources said people coming to the university for official work, including guardians, would have to seek permission from authorities to enter the campus. Visitors will have to register their vehicle numbers and whom they want to meet at the main entrance.

“No vehicles other than that of students, faculty and other varsity staff will be allowed to enter the campus without the valid vehicle pass,” said registrar Smarapriya Mishra, adding that they had lodged a police complaint against the student and two non-students for rash driving in the corridor.

The authorities said that two security guards, who were asked to close the main gate following the incident, had been suspended for dereliction in duty. “A decision on the action against the student will be taken during the council meeting to be held next week,” Mishra added.
