Cuttack, Dec. 11: A final-year degree student of Ravenshaw University allegedly committed suicide last evening by jumping from the third floor of a shopping mall here.

Barely six days ago, another student of the university had reportedly ended her life by jumping from a moving train.

Yesterday’s incident took place around 7pm. The student, Moonmoon Chakravarty, was rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to injuries this morning. She used to stay at Kathagada Sahi with her parents.

“My daughter was a little disturbed as her teachers were not co-operative. Her teachers always neglected her in the classroom,” said Moonmoon ’s mother Pinku Chakrovarthy, adding that she had left home around 6pm yesterday to go to the market and that the family had no information about the incident till late night.

Deputy commissioner of police S. Praveen Kumar said a case of unnatural death had been registered and the investigation was on.

Moonmoon had passed Plus Two from Ravenshaw Junior College with 60 per cent marks and was a good student, said her family members.

“She often used to go to the nearby market during evening hours and return within an hour. Since she had left her mobile phone at home, we could not contact her. We got information about the incident late at night,” her mother said.

Keeping in view the two incidents of suicide within a week, Ravenshaw University authorities have started to counsel girl students at various hostels.

“We have not received any complaint from the student or her family about any kind of non-cooperation by teachers,” said chairman of the Ravenshaw council of deans Pradipta Mohapatra.

He said a dedicated counselling cell had also been established where girl students could come and report any kind of problem.

Besides, the students have also been advised to seek immediate help of teachers if they find any of their batchmates or roommates were disturbed or if they noticed a sudden change in their behaviour, Mohapatra added.

On December 5, Jyotirmayi Kuturka, a Plus Three first-year arts student, had allegedly committed suicide by jumping off a running train near Kathajodi bridge.

While her family members suspected foul play, police recovered a rat killer poison from her bag at the death spot and a personal diary from her room in which she had begged forgiveness of her parents for taking the drastic step.

Jyotirmayi had called her parents the previous day and said she was upset as she could not attempt a six-mark question in a semester exam, said a senior police officer.
