
Bhubaneswar, July 19: Flood havoc spread to newer areas in south Odisha - Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts - following incessant rain.
Heavy rainfall in Kalimela and Podia block in Malkangiri district disrupted road communication as rainwater overflowed on to roads between Malkangiri and Kalimela at Kangrukonda and between Kalimela and Podia at Kanyashram.
A child - Rame Sodi, daughter of Muya Sodi - a resident of Sodigud village under Podia block, died after a wall collapsed, while Muya's wife Dule suffered a head injury and was rushed to Malkangiri district headquarters hospital.
Neighbouring Nabarangpur district reeled from flood following incessant and heavy rain. As many as 16 villages under seven blocks were affected by the flash floods. According to preliminary estimates, 80 houses in 10 tehsils have been damaged and 2,123 people have been evacuated to safer places.
Three bridges - Mokia, Dhansuli and Tamera - were damaged by the flash flood, and eight roads were cut off. Power supply was disrupted as electric poles got uprooted.
A unit of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (Odraf) was stationed in Nabarangpur for relief and rescue operations, while the restoration of road communication and power supply was on. The marooned Debriguda village was provided with safe drinking water, said officials of the special relief commissioner's office, which is monitoring the flood situation and response measures.
Restoration and relief operations were also on in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts, which were affected by flash floods earlier.

In Rayagada district, two railway over bridges near Kartikaguda were washed away by flash flood, and three bridges and two roads - Kashipur-Thuamul-Rampur road and Rayagada-Andhra Pradesh road - were damaged.
Officials said communication was restored temporarily on two roads, and 16 people were rescued by fire personnel and Odraf teams at various places.
Drinking water was supplied to Kalyansinghpur area through water tankers and cooked food was provided to flood-hit people at various places.
The district administration has been providing emergency relief to the affected people for seven days. Fifteen health camps were opened in Rayagada and Kalyansinghpur blocks.
In Kalahandi district, Kalahandi-Junagarh road, Bhawanipatna-Junagarh road and BNpur-Lanjigarh road were cut off and the railway line at Rupra Road of Narla block got submerged under floodwater.
Restoration work was on in full swing, while power supply was restored to 2,900 out of 9,000 affected consumers.
Navy helicopters have been requisitioned for air dropping of food packets in Niyamgiri.
