Bhubaneswar, Aug. 30: Protesters blocked major roads in the city over two different issues disrupting traffic here today.
Parents and guardians of students of Kendriya Vidyalaya-I in Unit IV blocked Janpath following a disagreement over formation of a committee for celebration of the school's golden jubilee.
The yearlong celebrations of the school's golden jubilee will begin on November 23. The parents accused the school authorities of being arbitrary in forming the committee. However, the authorities have rejected the allegations.
"The committee was formed arbitrarily and without consulting us. When we expressed our opposition to it, the school authorities misbehaved with us," said a parent.
Later, alleging misbehaviour by the principal of the school, the guardians blocked the Janpath for around 15 minutes. The agitation came to an end following intervention of the police. The school principal has denied the charges levelled against him.
"If they were not happy with the committee, they could have gone to the higher authorities. They should have taken up the matter at a proper forum for discussion," said school principal S.K. Behura.
Later, the protesters presented a memorandum to the district collector through the principal.
In another incident, residents of Itipur blocked NH-203 connecting Cuttack and Puri near Nuagaon after a 58-year-old farmer drowned in Gangua nullah.
The deceased, who has been identified as Narendra Jena, was crossing the nullah to reach his agricultural land.
"We have been demanding an overbridge on the nullah. In the absence of an overbridge, the local residents are forced to cross the nullah. The water level is high because of the rainy season and this is why he drowned," said Ajay Senapati, a demonstrator.
The protesters blocked the road with the body for around one hour until the police and district administration intervened.
