Paradip, Nov. 3: Indecisiveness of government agencies about the rehabilitation package for land-losers and displaced families at the site for the proposed Posco steel plant has triggered resentment in villages of the area.
The Rehabilitation and Peripheral Development Advisory Committee (RPDAC), empowered to revise the rehabilitation and compensation package, is yet to take up the issue despite the government promising to do so.
When the South Korean steelmaker agreed not to acquire the land in trouble-torn Dhinkia gram panchayat, people had hoped that the deadlock would soon come to an end. However, things have not moved an inch since violence erupted in the area on December 16 last year. Though the district administration has been trying to settle the rehabilitation issue with people from Gadakujang and Nuagaon gram panchayats, demands for a revised settlement are yet to be met.
“The RPDAC meeting would be convened soon for revision of resettlement-related issues. We are holding separate talks with representatives of various outfits and factions to put to end the rehabilitation and compensation standoff,” Paradip additional district magistrate Surajit Das said.
“The RPDAC is yet to be convened to settle the issue and people have lost faith in government agencies,” said Tamil Pradhan, spokesman of a local outfit.
“With the settlement of rehabilitation package getting inordinately delayed, people are steadily turning anti-Posco,” said Nirvaya Samantaray, general Secretary of United Action Committee, a pro-Posco outfit.
