Bhubaneswar, April 10: Students and faculty members of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhubaneswar are hopeful of another impressive placement season following a growth of 14 percentage points last year from the previous year.
The seven-year-old institute has shown a steady growth in terms of student placements. The placements went up from 42 per cent in 2013 and 82 per cent in 2014 to 96 per cent last year. The recruitment drive for this year began in January.
"Nearly 12 companies have already visited the campus this year. Besides Dell, which selected 11 students, companies such as Ibexi, Infosys, Mindtree, IBM, Capgemini, Incture, ITC, Infotech, Tech Mahindra, Amdocs, Huawei and SAP have also visited the campus. We expect a few more companies to come for recruitment between now and June," said the institute's professor-in-charge (Training & Placement Cell) Debasish Jena.
Snapdeal's offer of Rs 16.5 lakh to a student last year was the highest recorded by the institute while the average salary offer was around Rs 4 lakh, Jena said.
The students are offered positions such as software developers, software engineers, trainee software engineers and programmers by the companies that hire them. Last year, Infosys hired 72 students, IBM's Global Business Services recruited 38 students, while Capgemini India and Tech Mahindra recruited 14 and 12 students, respectively.
Institute authorities said they provided the students with pre-placement training sessions to compete at the global level.
"The institute holds mock group discussions and personal interview sessions, which help us to prepare for the placements. In addition, the placement cell organises regular tests to evaluate the students on the basis of their preparedness in quantitative aptitude, reasoning, GD-PI and technical skills," said Sudha Mishra, a student of the institute.
"The institute also conducts virtual campus drives to warm up the students before attending placement drives," she added.
The institute also encouraged its students to work as interns in different organisations to gain practical knowledge in their respective fields, said another student.
