Bhubaneswar, July 15: The Khandagiri police today recovered the body of a 28-year-old woman from her Rajiv Nagar residence near Khandagiri. The body was found hanging from the ceiling of her living room.

Though family of the deceased, Suchismita Mohapatra, initially alleged that her in-laws had murdered her, they did not lodge any police complaint. Suchismita had not left any suicide note.

However, the police said the woman had allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling around 2pm yesterday. She was staying with her husband, Nupuraj Mohapatra, and in-laws. The deceased, a native of Ganjam, had an arranged marriage with Nupuraj three years ago and they had a two-year-old son.

Sources said her husband, an engineer, was not at home when the incident occured. The in-laws of the deceased said they were all taking an afternoon nap when Suchismita hanged herself in her room. They said Suchismita had a quarrel with her mother-in-law in the morning and skipped lunch. The police informed Suchismita’s parents who reached here last night. The body was sent for post-mortem today.

“Though her in-laws claimed it to be a case of suicide, we still waited for her parents to arrive and have a look at the body,” said a police officer.

Kumud Chandra Pattanaik, Suchismita’s father and a retired police havildar, said he had been informed about the incident yesterday. “I knew my daughter and she was not someone to commit suicide. When I saw the body, I suspected foul play. But, I do not want to lodge a complaint as this may affect the future of her child,” said Pattanaik, adding that his son-in-law was good, but Nupuraj’s mother kept torturing Suchismita mentally.

One of the neighbours, however, said he had heard the mother-in-law quarrelling with Suchismita several times. The police have registered a case of unnatural death.
