Cuttack: Incessant overnight rain led to overflowing drains and inundated roads in a few places prone to waterlogging here on Thursday.

The city experienced 105.4 mm rainfall between 8pm and 8am. Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) officials worked overtime to ensure that de-watering pumps in low-lying areas worked and drain blockages were cleared.

The overnight rain also led to schools and colleges suspending classes for the day.

CMC executive engineer (I) Manish Sarkar said parts of Badambadi, including the main road and Roxy Lane, were inundated by overflowing drains. The entire stretch from Gamhandia to Rausapatna also remained waterlogged.

"The situation improved in most areas as the sluice gates for releasing water from a main drain into the Kathajodi river at Khannagar were open," Sarkar said.

"The opening of sluice gates at Matrubhawan to release water from the other main drain into the Taladanda canal also helped tackle waterlogging in some parts," he added.#CMC executive engineer (I) Bhagyadhar Sahoo said de-watering pumps helped to check waterlogging in some areas, especially in and around the police wireless and signals division office in Tulasipur.

Parts of Baunsahgali, Sutahat, Odia Bazar, Stuartpatna and Srivihar also remained waterlogged because of overflowing drains. This affected traffic movement on the stretch till late afternoon.

"Water has receded in most of the areas as there has been no further rain," Sahoo said.

Waterlogging is a common feature in the city due to its low topography. To tackle the situation, the CMC has positioned de-watering pumps in several areas as part of its strategy to manage waterlogging following heavy rain.

On Thursday morning the CMC used over 100 pumps to drain out water from the affected areas.
