Students threaten agitation

Bhubaneswar: Engineering college students, under the banner of the BPUT Students’ Organisation, on Monday gheraoed the Biju Patnaik University of Technology office here demanding revocation of unjustified fee hike in private institutions, timely conduct of exams and publication of results. The students met the varsity vice-chancellor, J.K. Satapathy, and urged him to resolve the issues within a month, failing which they would intensify their agitation.

Election

Bhubaneswar: Surya Ranjan Mohanty was elected as the president and Hemant Kumar Nayak as the vice-president of Orissa Information Service Association. Chittaranja Pati was chosen as the general secretary. Umashankar Mohaptra as the joint-secretary and Bhabani Shankrar Bhuiyan took the charge as treasurer.

Traffic chaos

Puri: Traffic in the town was on Monday affected after about 130 private buses started plying through the Grand Road picking up passengers. Alleging that the city bus service was affecting their business, the private bus owners’ association went for a route change. They alleged that the city bus was picking up passengers from the Grand Road and Market Square, disturbing their business.

Eight arrested

Cuttack: City police on Monday claimed to have smashed a gambling gang by arresting eight persons, including the kingpin, Krishna Rao, 34. All the persons were arrested from Ranihat canal road at around 12.30am last night. Cash worth Rs 27,000 and three motorcycles have been recovered.

Road mishap

Bhubaneswar: Two persons died in a road mishap near Aiginia on Monday. The deceased, Prabhakar Panda and Mantu Mishra, were residents of Berhampur. The accident took place when a vegetable laden pick-up van hit a truck from backside which was parked at the road. The deceased were on the pick-up van and died on the spot.
