Lawyers protest in Rourkela

Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of lawyers of the Rourkela bar association on Friday protested against the “misbehaviour” of the district police. Raising slogans, the lawyers surrounded the office of the Rourkela district magistrate and handed him a memorandum. The lawyers are apparently peeved over various incidents in the recent past in which police have not taken “proper” action.

Farmer suicide

Bhubaneswar: A farmer from Berhampur who was being treated at the district hospital after he attempted suicide, died on Friday. Sibram Nayak consumed pesticides on January 15. Nayak had apparently taken a loan of Rs 50,000 and was under a great deal of stress for not able to repay the amount after crop loss following untimely rains.

Bear cubs

Bhubaneswar: The Keonjhar police on Friday rescued two bear cubs from a person who had kept them captive in his house. The person has been arrested and forwarded to court. The police have handed over the bear cubs to forest officials.

Lawyer death

Bhubaneswar: The body of a government lawyer was found handing from a roadside tree in Angul on Friday. Local residents spotted the body of Mayadhar Pradhan early on Friday morning. Pradhan left his home on Wednesday to attend a marriage function but did not back. Police are yet to ascertain if it is a case of suicide or murder. The body has been sent for autopsy.

Special train

Bhubaneswar: Mother Express, an exhibition-on-wheels run by the Indian Railways, exhibiting the life and philanthropic deeds of Mother Teresa on the occasion of her birth centenary, has chugged into Koraput railway station on Friday and will reach the Brahmapur station on Sunday. The public exhibition train will remain open from 10am to 6pm.

Final rites

Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of veteran Gandhian and eminent litterateur Chittaranjan Das was cremated at his native village Bagalpur in Jagatsinghpur on Friday. His body was accompanied by a huge procession that covered the entire village. Thousands of people from Baisi Mouza areas, including MLAs Bishnu Das, Ravi Bhoi and the district sub-collector, attended the funeral.

Train schedule

Bhubaneswar: Train traffic and power will remain blocked between Bhadrak and Ranital stations from 8.50pm to 10.00pm on January 24 and 25, due to modernisation works. As a result, the Howrah-Bhadrak passenger will be terminated at Ranital or en-route before Ranital from 9.57pm to 10.05pm for the two days.
