Anthrax patient dead

Berhampur: Rulka Majhi, an anthrax-affected patient, died at the Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday. he MKCG authorities, however, maintained Majhi did not die of anthrax. “He died because he was an alcoholic and his liver was completely damaged. He was also suffering from severe chest infection,” said Jogendra Prasad Behera, superintendent of the hospital.eanwhile, two experts, including project coordinator Chitta Ranjan Swain and anthologist Debananda Patra of Cattle Research Centre at Phulnakhara in Cuttack, visited the anthrax-affected areas of Kandhamal district along with sub-divisional veterinary officer Debabrata Banerjee and others on Saturday.

Lion death

Bhubaneswar: A 21-year-old lion died after prolonged illness at Nandankanan Zoo’s enclosure No. 5 on the city outskirts. The death was caused due to liver tumour and cyst formation. With this death, the number of lions remaining in the zoo is now 16. A post-mortem on the animal was done at the College of Veterinary Science, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology.

Condolence

Sambalpur: A condolence meeting was organised at Sanskrutik Samaj Bhawan in the city to remember former lecturer of Sambalpur University R. Someswar Rao, who passed away. Rao was a lecturer in Economics and a consultant to the Planning Commission of Orissa and well known for his extensive research on the displaced people of Nalco, Hirakud Dam and Indrabati project. e had also written a book titled Understanding semi-feudal colonial society and was the founding editor of the socio-economic magazine The Bikalpa Bichar.

BJP mulls FIR

Bhubaneswar: The state unit of the BJP is planning to file a case on the horse-trading issue that had allegedly taken place during the Rajya Sabha election on June 17, 2010. “We are consulting legal experts on this issue,” said the party's state unit president Jual Oram. n Saturday, the Congress MP from Nabarangpur, Pradeep Majhi, offered to be a witness in the case. Two audio cassettes have surfaced revealing that horse-trading had taken place during the Rajya Sabha polls.

Police squads

Bhubaneswar: Police have come up with four special squads to tackle snatching cases, which are on a rise in the twin city. The police have also decided to invigorate patrolling in vulnerable areas in the two cities. Snatchers have looted around Rs 40 lakh in the last two months.

Power rates

Bhubaneswar: Orissa Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) has decided to reduce electricity charges by Rs 1.5 per unit. The new rate would be applied between 51 and 100 units. With this reduction, consumers can avail electricity at Rs 2 per unit.
