Woman, 8-month-old burnt to death
Bhubaneswar: A woman and her child were burnt to death while her husband and daughter escaped with serious burn injuries on Tuesday after her brother-in-law set afire the room they were in.
The incident happened on Monday midnight at Jahnipada village in Nayagarh district.
The deceased have been identified as Sushama Santa and her eight-month-old son. Sushama’s three-year-old daughter and husband are critical and are being treated at at the Nayagarh district hospital. There was allegedly a dispute between the brothers over property.
The accused Pravata Santa and his wife are absconding.
Puri: All street vendors on Tuesday closed their shops in protest against the district administration’s plan to evict them.
'We should be properly rehabilitated before the eviction drive takes place. Nearly 2,000 families have road-side shops,” said Chandi Prasad Singh, a vendor.
However, shopkeepers have rejected the administration plan to settle them behind the Jagannath Ballavha maths.
Bhubaneswar: A delegation led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president K.P. Singh Deo met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday and urged him to provide adequate relief for farmers of the rain-hit areas of the state.
A central team has already visited the state to asses the crop loss due to untimely rain in December and submitted its report to the Centre.
The state government has submitted a memorandum demanding an assistance of nearly Rs 1,057 crore to deal with the situation.
Cuttack: Two persons were arrested and a large number of CDs were seized during a raid on shops located at Bharatia tower in Badambadi area, police said on Tuesday.
Badambadi police raided the shops and seized around 2,500 pornographic and pirated CDs on Monday. The accused have been identified as Arya Nayak and Prakash Dalei.
Kendrapara: Police on Tuesday seized a large amount of explosive substances from two anti-socials Pradeep Patra (20) and Manoj Sethy (27).
They were intercepted in the township area and gunpowder weighing over 2kg were seized from their possession, said Kendrapara superintendent of police Narsingha Bhol. The explosives were meant for manufacturing country-made bombs. The duo was forwarded to judicial custody under 4 and 5 Indian Explosive Act and under the provisions of 25-Arms act, Bhol said.
