State to boost IT literacy

Bhubaneswar: A knowledge corporation would soon be set up in the state to promote literacy in information technology. All schools and colleges would be included under this initiative. esides computer education, the focus of the probable knowledge corporation would be on grooming young talents and preparing them for competitive examinations, said state higher education secretary, Chandrasekhar Kumar. The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited had put forth a proposal before the state government on March 9 in this regard.

Award

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will award Orissa for its outstanding achievement in the field of agricultural production. The award will be presented at a function in New Delhi organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. State agriculture minister Pradeep Maharathi said despite natural calamities, the agricultural production crossed 85 lakh metric tonne in 2010-11.

Project

Bhubaneswar: The National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities under the Archaeological Survey of India began its project on documentation of monuments, sites and antiquities in the State on Thursday. Around 50 young students from the departments of archaeology and history have been pooled in for the project that will be conducted in all 30 districts of Orissa. The project will be on for around 10 months.

ICZM review

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday reviewed the implementation of the integrated coastal zone management programme (ICZM) and stressed on preparation of the guidelines on the coastal ecosystem. The Rs 227 crore programme is implemented in 235 villages in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda and Ganjam districts.Under this programme, another 44 multi-purpose cyclone centres will be set up along the coast. Steps will be taken to improve the livelihood of the people living along the coast.

One dead

Bhubaneswar: An eight-year-old boy Babula Pinguriya died and his sister and mother sustained injuries as the wall of their house fell on them on Wednesday night. The family is staying at Tihikutsahi in Mancheswar area. The victims were admitted to the Capital Hospital. The injured were identified as Bela Pinguriya, the mother and Puspa Pinguriya, the sister.

Champ returns

Bhubaneswar: Puri girl Aparajita Gochikar, who recently won the under-18 gold at the Commonwealth Chess Championship held in South Africa, was given a rousing welcome at the Biju Patnaik Airport here on Thursday. Gochikar, who defeated Betha Jerry of Republic of South Africa with seven points out of 11 rounds at the championship, said she wishes to become a Woman International Master this year.
