Bhubaneswar: A special CBI court on Wednesday convicted a commercial inspector of East Coast Railway positioned in Rourkela and sentenced him to one and a half year's rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 6,000. The accused, Chitrabhanu Chattopadhay, who was appointed in the South Eastern Railway in 2006, had demanded Rs 1,000 from Bhubaneswar Dwibedi, an LIC agent to erect a signboard in the Rourkela railway station. He was trapped by the CBI while accepting the money. Bhubaneswar: The sleuths of the excise department on Wednesday arrested a woman in Puri for carrying eight grams of brown sugar worth more than Rs 8 lakh. Getting a tip off, the excise department officials conducted a raid in a house under Kumbharpada police station and recovered the brown sugar from the lady. For the last few years, the easy availability of brown sugar and other contraband products has emerged as a major challenge for police as well as the excise department officials. Cuttack: Police on Wednesday arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the recent attack on a man. The accused have been identified as Niranjan Das (30), Jitu Mandal (22), Prashant Das alias Mitua (24), Brundaban Das (24) alias Gobara and Santosh Das (24). All of them have been arrested for attacking one Sukuta Mandal (41) of Upper Telengabazar area on April 4. Sukuta was attacked by seven anti-socials when he was returning home after watching the Kathajodi Mahotsav. He had to be admitted to the S.C.B. Medical College and Hospital. Cuttack: Ravenshaw University on Wednesday condoled the sad demise of former principal of the erstwhile Ravenshaw College, professor Rama Krushna Kar, who passed away on Monday night in his Shelter Square residence here after prolonged illness. Kar served the erstwhile Ravenshaw College as its principal from 1999 to 2006, after serving as a professor and head of the department of botany in the college for a brief period. He was the last regular principal of Ravenshaw College, before it was upgraded into a university on November 15, 2006. Bhubaneswar: Dhamra port in Bhadrak district, which is all set for the commercial operations, made a week-long celebrations of the 48th National Maritime Day. Several competitions among the employees, cultural events and awareness programmes for schoolchildren marked the celebrations. Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway has taken four hours’ traffic block between Sason and Rengali stations for modernisation works. As a result, some of the trains will be cancelled and short-terminated on April 9. Some passenger trains between Rourkela and Puri will remain cancelled.
