Killer gets lifer

Paradip: A fast track court in Jagatsinghpur sentenced a 40-year-old man to life sentence for killing his father a year ago. The convict, Sarbeswar Bhuyan, had stabbed his 70-year-old father Rasananda Bhuyan to death on May 12, 2010 at his native Jankoti village. Madhusmita Das, the magistrate of Jagatsinghpur first-track court, held him guilty of murdering his father on the basis of circumstantial evidence, corroborative evidence by witnesses and forensic report of the seized weapon used for the crime.

Land scheme

Bhubaneswar: The state government has introduced a scheme to allot one tenth of an acre of land to each family of the sea erosion-hit Satabhaya and Kanhupur villages in Kendrapara district. The land patta would be issued both in the name of husband and wife. The family will get a house under “Mo Kudia Yojana”. Steps would be taken to provide drinking water, sanitation and primary schools. Employment would be provided under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS). People belonging to these two villages are living under constant threat of submergence by the sea.

Training

Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to impart pre-training to youths aspiring to join in the military and para-military forces. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the chief secretary. It was also decided that youths of the state would be given placement-linked training. All the departments have been asked to chalk out a plan in this regard. So far, 1.30lakh youths have been given the skill upgradation training.

Brown sugar

Balasore: Sahadevkhunta police of Balasore seized more than 10gm of brown sugar worth around Rs 1lakh after raiding a house in Orodbazar. Four persons of a family were arrested. They have been identified as Gunhar Biwi (50), her two sons Sk Mofi (35) and Sk Quarban (23) and daughter-in-law Sanwar Biwi (27), the wife of Mofi. Cash worth Rs 21,799 and nine mobile sets were also seized, said police sources.

Rape charge

Balasore: Nilgiri police arrested a self-styled godman on charges of raping a married woman. Three others including the husband of the victim were also held for abetting the crime. The victim lodged a compliant with police accusing Gadadhar Goswami of raping her several times on a particular night. The others arrested were the victim’s husband, Ajay Singh (27), her relatives Duma Singh (43) and Parbati Singh (38). “The victim had alleged that she was compelled by her family members including her husband to spend a night with the Baba, who would ward off all evils after which she would be blessed with a child,” said inspector-in-charge, Rabinarayan Mohapatra. “We have recorded the statements of the accused and sent both the victim and accused for medical examinations,” Mohapatra added.
