Bhubaneswar, May 15: The state crime branch's cyber cell today issued an advisory asking all government departments and educational institutions to upgrade their online security following the ransomware WannaCry attack on Microsoft Windows computer operating systems around the world.
Though police have not come across any incident of the ransomware's attack in the state, the advisory was issued as a precaution.
Crime branch officials said the advisory of dos and don'ts has been issued to Odisha Computer Application Centre and National Informatics Centre, which look after most of the official websites of the state government. The crime branch had advised to keep anti-ransomware and anti-virus software up to date, keep systems updated, enable and configure firewall and maintain regular backup of data.
"Internet users should check the email sender and ensure that there are no spelling mistakes in the address. The users should be aware of any wrong spelling or domain names that end with uncommon country codes such as .ru or .ng," said a crime branch official.
The state government had earlier constituted a crisis management group headed by the state home secretary. The chief of the state crime branch has also been designated as the chief information security officer.
