Bhubaneswar, May 23: Goons today attacked a stamp vendor with a sharp-edged weapon and decamped with Rs 6 lakh near Chachera Sahi within Khurda police limits.
One of the gang members, Hyder Hussain Khan, 29, was later nabbed in Kalinga Nagar. Police have seized Rs 3.75 lakh from him.
The cops said the incident took place around 2.45pm when the stamp vendor, Benudhar Nayak, 49, was on his way to deposit the cash in a bank.
"The victim told us that three motorcycle-borne goons suddenly started chasing him and asked him to stop. As soon as he got off his motorcycle, one of the criminals assaulted him and decamped with the cash," said a police official.
Eyewitnesses said they rushed to the spot after they heard somebody screaming. "When we reached the spot we found a man lying on the road, bleeding. He was so scared that he could barely speak. Later, he told us what had happened and we informed the police," said an eyewitness.
Nayak, who suffered injuries on his thigh and hands, was rushed to the nearest hospital.
"We suspect the goons knew that the victim was carrying the cash. There were five criminals involved in the incident and one of them has been nabbed from Khandagiri. We are interrogating him to find the other accused," said Khurda superintendent of police, Dilip Kumar Das.
The police said Khan was nabbed when the goons were busy distributing the money among themselves.
"Our men found five goons sitting near an abandoned place. When one of our men approached them, the accused started to run. Though the other four managed to flee, our men were able to overpower Khan. The motorcycle used in the crime has also been seized," said a police official of Khandagiri police station.
