Jajpur, April 5: One person was killed and eight others, including two women, were injured following a clash between two families over land disputes in Chandanpur village under Bari police station limits in the district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Rabindra Malik (60).

According to the FIR filed by the deceased’s son, on Monday evening his father was fencing his land when his immediate neighbour Manguli Malik and his two sons objected to it. Then a violent clash ensued following which land owner Rabindra was killed and his wife Janaki Malik, three sons Krupasindhu, Bipin, Mahendra and daughter-in-law Lata were injured. Three of them were injured seriously.

“While my elderly father was fencing our own land, Manguli Malik and his two sons Srikanta Malik and Pratap Malik attacked him with sharp weapons. Hearing his scream for help, our family members reached at the site. Then they also attacked us leaving five of us injured,” said Krupasindhu, son of the deceased.

When some villagers tried to intervene, Manguli’s family members chased them away brandishing lethal weapons, he said. The injured were rushed to the local government hospital for treatment. Later they all were shifted to the district headquarters hospital at Jajpur town as their condition deteriorated.

“A dispute over a small patch of land was going on between Rabindra Malik and Manguli Malik. While Rabindra was fencing the land claiming his ownership, he and his family members were attacked by Manguli and his two sons,” said Shaikh Akbar Ali, inspector-in-charge of Bari police station.

“Critically injured Rabindra died on his way to hospital,” he said, adding that five family members of the deceased were undergoing treatment. On the other hand, accused Manguli Malik and his two sons have sustained minor injuries following the retaliation allegedly by the deceased family.
