Bhubaneswar, Oct. 4: An executive engineer working with the public health division in Jeypore of Koraput district was today caught by the vigilance officials while allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a contractor.
The accused, Gopal Chandra Nayak, 51, was nabbed while receiving the amount at hotel in the city.
Vigilance officials said the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant Kulamani Sahoo for passing a bill amounting Rs 30 lakh.
"Sahoo was awarded a project at Jeypore in 2015-16 that had an estimated cost of Rs 1.07 crore. After completion of work, Sahoo received a payment of Rs 66.44 lakh. Later, when Sahoo requested the executive engineer to pass the arrear of Rs 30 lakh, Nayak demanded Rs 2 lakh as bribe," said a vigilance official.
Later, Sahoo approached the anti-corruption wing of the police, which subsequently laid a trap.
"The accused received the money with his right handNayak had joined government service in 1993. from a electrical contractor to process the file for execution of agreement
Vigilance sleuths said that the complainant of the case Kartika Chandra Prusty was awarded " Hingila shallow project for Rs 15 lakh and he later submitted the relevant documents to execute the agreement. " However the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 10000 from the contractor for processing of file. Subsequently a trap was laid and the accused was caught red-handed taking the bribe at his office chamber. We are searching the official quarter of the accused to find out any disproportionate assets," said a vigilance official.
