Relief memorandum for Phailin victims

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee submitted a memorandum to governor S.C. Jamir demanding formation of an all-party committee at state and district levels to oversee relief and restoration work in the cyclone and flood ravaged districts apart from involving National Disaster Management Authority to supervise reconstruction activities of infrastructure projects.

The document said there was a gap in measures announced and taken, while people taking shelter at various places were not given food on the day of cyclone.

Sentence

Cuttack: A special vigilance court sentenced former secretary of Sub-Divisional House Building Co-Operative Society, Bhadrak, to three years rigorous imprisonment following conviction in a case registered against him on April 3, 2003 on bribery charges. Narendra Kumar Nath has also been slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000 or six months rigorous imprisonment in default of payment of fine.

Smuggle cuffs

Kendrapara: Forest officials arrested two persons on charges of smuggling rare Indian chameleons at Jaira village in Kendrapara district. Pratap Behera of Bahakuda and Abhik Sardar of Badatubi village were sent to jail after their bail pleas were rejected. The exotic species of chameleons are protected under the International Trade in Endangered Species Act and Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Exam reforms

Bhubaneswar: Vice-chancellors from all state universities have unanimously agreed to adopt certain academic and exam reforms including choice-based credit system, uniform syllabus and upgradation of course curriculum during a VC conference in the city. They also discussed administrative reforms.

Varsity funds

Bhubaneswar: The state government has granted Rs 4 crore to set up a convention hall and girls hostel on the campus of North Odisha University. The fund was granted from the infrastructure development fund for 2013-14. Higher education department has asked the universities to spend the allocated fund by March 2014.
