Matric exams

Bhubaneswar: Matriculation exams will start from the first week of March, said officials of Board of Secondary Education. Marks will be replaced by grades while exam papers will have equal number of multiple-choice objective and long-answer type questions. The sample question papers are available on www.bseodisha.nic.in.

Minor killed

Bhubaneswar: The mangled body of a four-year-old boy was recovered at Tapanga in Khurda district, three days after he went missing from home. The police said the killers strangulated Kanhu Das to death and dumped his body at Khua Mundia to destroy evidence. They suspect old rivalry or witchcraft to be the reason behind the murder. Two persons have been detained in this connection.

Avian study

Bhubaneswar: The Bombay Natural History Society has started a study on the impact of cyclone Phailin on migrating patterns of birds coming to Chilika lake. It is being carried out in collaboration with the Chilika Development Authority and wildlife wing of the forest department. Around 1.20 lakh birds have come to the lake so far.

Nalco award

Bhubaneswar: National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco), a Navratna public sector unit, bagged the EEPC (Engineering Export Promotion Council, Eastern Region) gold trophy, as top exporter in the large enterprise category for outstanding export performance during the year 2011-12. In the financial year 2011-12, Nalco achieved a sales turnover of Rs 6,927 crore, with export earnings of Rs 2,569 crore.

Solar energy

Bhubaneswar: The Solar Energy Society of India will organise an international Congress on Renewable Energy and exhibition from November 27 to 29 at KIIT University premises. It would invite100 students across India who are working or willing to work on solar energy applications and innovations. Participants from Japan, Germany many other countries would take part in the conference.

Left protest

Bhubaneswar: Members of Left parties and Samajwadi party met governor S.C. Jamir and handed a memorandum in connection with the Bhushan fire mishap that claimed two lives and left 29 others injured. They demanded Rs 20 lakh ex-gratia and jobs for the bereaved families and arrest of guilty officials. The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the state government to furnish within four weeks a report on the incident.
