Mallick applies for bail in acid case

Bhubaneswar: Khirod Mallick, the main accused in an acid attack case in Mancheswar last year, applied for bail before the district and sessions court on Friday. He had been sent to 14 days of judicial custody on Thursday in connection with the case. City police have filed a petition before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate to take Mallick, brother of former minister Pramila Mallick, on remand to interrogate him about his involvement in a shooting attempt on a medicine salesman in April last year. He is suspected to have hired contract killers for the purpose.

Reds surrender

Bhubaneswar: Four Maoists of Kalinga Nagar division surrendered before DIG (western range) Jaswant Jethua in Keonjhar on Friday. They have been identified as Sambari Munda alias Titi, Rambati Hembram (both women), Iban Tiyu and Dharani Singh. While the state government had announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for Sambari, the other three rebels carried a reward of Rs 20,000.

Arrest

BHUBANESWAR: City police have detained a builder on allegations of cheating around 200 people to the tune of Rs 10 crore, promising land on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar and doubling the money invested in his company. The builder, identified as Prakash Chandra Panda, was running the Siridi Sai Estate Private Limited company at Surya Nagar. Police also have seized his Indica car.

OJS postponed

Cuttack: The Odisha Judicial Service Examination-2012 has been rescheduled to June 4 following the Bharat Bandh call of the Opposition parties on May 31, the original date of exams. Around 2,780 candidates would appear for the exam at Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Balasore and Berhampur.

High grades

Bhubaneswar: BJB (Autonomous) College has recorded a pass percentage of 90 in the final year degree exams, the results of which were declared on Friday. While the success rate for arts is 90 per cent, for science and commerce it is 88 and 91 per cent, respectively. Prarthna Patnaik of physics department has been adjudged best graduate.

SP gheraoed

Angul: A large group of people of Kishorenagar gheraoed the office of the superintendent of police during a three-hour protest on Friday against the arrest of 12 persons from their area for allegedly assaulting an assistant engineer. They suspected him to be an employee of a private power company which is setting up its plant here much to the dissatisfaction of the local people.
