Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in the price rise of onions and urged him to temporarily suspend export of the essential commodity with immediate effect. The spiralling price of onion is going to be a major issue in the urban local body polls in the state.

Fireman dies

Bhubaneswar: A newly recruited fireman died on Wednesday while he was attending a training session at the State Fire-Training Institute near Baramunda. The victim, identified as Ranjan Kumar Rout, a native of Joranda of Dhenkanal, was in his sixth month of training and was going to be posted after a month. Officials at the institute said the incident took place on Wednesday evening while Rout was being trained in a smoke house with an oxygen mask. He felt uneasy after the training. Later, he was rushed to a private hospital where he was declared dead.

Man injured

Bhubaneswar: A person on Wednesday was found lying on the road near Sishupalgarh on the city outskirts. The victim, identified as Gangadhar Behera, a casual labourer, was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition. Police officials said Behera had lodged a complaint of theft of his mobile and cash a fortnight ago and they suspect the attack was due to retaliation by the goons involved in the theft.

Accident

Balasore: A helper of a bus was charred to death after the vehicle in Bhograi block caught fire while he was asleep. The driver was also inside the bus, but he managed to escape after seeing flames engulfing the bus. Police are investigating the cause of fire.

Poll advice

Bhubaneswar: State election commissioner Ajit Tripathy has restricted political leaders from using the Independence Day programmes as a platform for political campaign in view of the general elections to urban local bodies on September 19. He has advised them to restrict themselves from extolling achievements of martyrs.

Train to Puri

Bhubaneswar: The railways have extended the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)-Bhubaneswar weekly superfast Express to Puri. The train will leave Puri at 9.25pm on Tuesdays. The timings and stoppages between Bhubaneswar and LTT will remain unchanged. It will depart at 8.35pm on Sunday on return.

Bhusan plant

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Pollution Control Board has sealed the 300MW power plant of Bhusan Energy Ltd in Dhenkanal. The board had issued a notice to the plant for violating pollution norms under Section 31A of Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, and Section 33A of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.
