Tiger off zoo limits

Bhubaneswar: The Nandankanan zoo authorities suspect that the six-year-old Royal Bengal Tiger that escaped from the zoo on May 31 has left the sanctuary limits, as they have not been able to trace its pugmarks in the area during the past four days. We have not found any pugmarks over the past four days. But at the same time, it may be possible that the pugmarks are not visible due to rain,” said deputy director of the zoo C.R. Mishra. Representative of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for the technical committee constituted, Biswajit Mohanty said the chances of the tiger escaping into the nearby Chandaka-Damapara wildlife sanctuary could not be ruled out.

Umbrella plan

Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to include pensioners, widows and the physically challenged in urban areas under the free umbrella scheme. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik directed collectors of all districts to provide an allowance of Rs 100 to the beneficiaries on June 15. Earlier, the scheme covered 33 lakh people in rural areas.

Rath yatra

Bhubaneswar: Security of devotees and systematic darshan will be the primary concern of organisers of rath yatra, which starts on July 10, said chief administrator of Jagannath temple Arvind Padhee during the rath yatra coordination committee meeting held on Thursday.

Tree felling

Kendrapara: Forest officials took four persons into custody on charges of illegal felling and transportation of Casuarina trees from reserved forest areas near Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary. The accused persons, who belong to Puri, were ferrying the smuggled logs in country boats when they were intercepted near Batighar within Mahakalpada police limits.

Fraud

Balasore: The CBI arrested a couple from Basta for alleged bank fraud. J.S. Jena and his wife Tulasi were taken into custody after the investigating team found that the duo had availed loan by submitting fake land documents, said the police.
