Cuttack: Preliminary investigations indicated that assistant fire officer Sailendu Mohanty died allegedly because of not complying with instructions on how to use the breathing apparatus in case of any emergencies underwater. “After analysing prima facie evidence, we suspect that it was a human failure rather than a mechanical error,” said director of fire services Binay Kumar Behera. However, the Swedish trainer has been asked to submit a report on whether there was any technical snag in the equipment.

Kidnappers

Berhampur: Seven persons have been arrested on the charge of kidnapping K. Ganesh Rao, 20, son of K. Mohan Rao, a Berhampur-based builder. The arrested include Sumeet Agrawal of Netta Sahi, who is a friend of Ganesh and had gone with him to Salia Dam for a picnic on the day of the kidnap. The other arrested persons were Purna Chandra Pradhan, Lava Gouda, Kedar Sahu, Madan Pradhan, Narasingha Pradhan and A. Trinath Rao. They were all arrested on charges of conspiracy to kidnap Ganesh Rao. They have been produced before court.

Shot at

Berhampur: K. Madhusudan Rao, 25, partner of Madhu Motors, was seriously injured after he was shot at on Thursday evening. Rao, who was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, was later moved to Visakhapatnam. The incident is suspected to be a fallout of business rivalry.

Ammo seized

Dhenkanal: The district police on Friday seized a huge cache of explosives from a vehicle on Thursday night. About 6,000 detonators and 4,000 power gel were seized. hree persons, including driver-cum-owner of the vehicle Dileswar Sahu, Milu Behera and Suman Jena were arrested in this connection. The police ruled out the possibility of any links between the arrested persons and Maoists.

Six dead

Bhubaneswar: Six people died and five were injured after being struck by lightning in separate incidents in Jajpur and Balasore districts on Thursday evening. Three deaths were reported in Sukinda and Danagadi blocks in Jajpur.
