Focus on leadership

Young management professionals and students pursuing postgraduate diploma in management course had an opportunity to learn leadership skills and innovation from the bigwigs in the human resource industry at the “HR Round Table”, organised by the Birla Institute of Management and Technology, Bhubaneswar, on February 15. The programme was held in association with the National HRD Network and the AON Hewitt, an American human capital and management consulting service provider. The theme of the round table was “The Art and Science of Developing Leadership” under the sub-theme “Driving Innovation and Building Diversity”.

Senior officials from public-sector units, private companies, government departments, banks and academic institutions attended the event.

Ajay Soni of the AON Hewitt moderated and guided the panel discussion in which panellists answered a maze of questions. Students and other participants posed many interesting questions during the question-and-answer session making the discussion lively.

Fun and fashion

Spectrum, the annual cultural festival of NIFT, Bhubaneswar, held on February 15 and 16, was full of colours. The event consisted of various on-stage and off-stage competitions and cultural nights with fashion show being its major focus. The off-stage events included various competitions such as T-shirt painting, face painting, Bollywood quiz, movie spoof, photography, street play, treasure hunt and many more.The on-stage events included cultural night and the war of bands that saw a surge of spectators. Various participating colleges were KIIT, KISS, CET, Utkal University, XIMB, IIT and many other from Bhubaneswar. Various new designs were showcased at the fashion show that proved to be a head-turner. The college students created the collections and the models sporting them were their classmates.

Netaji’s Odisha link

Central University of Odisha organised the 2nd Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das Memorial Lecture in Social Sciences on “Netaji’s Vision of National Unity” on February 16 at Idcol Auditorium, Bhubaneswar. Sugata Bose, Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs at Harvard University, USA, delivered the lecture while K.K. Basa, anthropology professor at Utkal University, also addressed the programme. Chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mahapatra was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion, Bose reminded the audience of Subhash Chandra Bose’s Odisha connections. The grand nephew of Netaji provided a detailed description of Netaji’s journey from his childhood to freedom struggle.

Science and health

A national conference on technical advances in material science and research was organised by the School of Physics, Sambalpur University. The three-day conference concluded on February 15. Delegates from several parts of the country took part in the conference. During his discourse, varsity vice-chancellor B.C. Barik emphasised on issues related to matter and energy. R.P. Tondon, a professor of physics at the University of Delhi, discussed how the material science was highly interdisciplinary, which included all branches of science. The Hi-Tech Dental College and Hospital organised a live workshop and programme on dental implantology in collaboration with Equinox on February 13. Periodontist Tejas Kothari discussed about various modern techniques for dental implants and also demonstrated a live surgical procedure on a patient. Students from various institutions and dental practitioners attended this workshop. The Bhubaneswar chapter of the Haemophilia Society organised a state-level haemophilia treatment and awareness camp on February 12. Addressing a gathering of around 200 haemophilia patients and medical students from all over the state at the SOA University, Sudha Sethy, assistant professor of clinical haematology at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, said the government would prepare a register of such patients. “Depending on which district had the highest number of such patients, other day-care centres would also be set up shortly,” she said.

Seminar on bard

A seminar on the creations of legendary poet and playwright William Shakespeare was organised by the department of English at the Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore. Several speakers expressed their views on the plays scripted by him focusing on his insight and philosophy. Along with the history, they also discussed the classic comedies, tragedies and romantic plays penned by the Bard of Avon.

Being a sport

Berhampur University students Sunit Kumar Minz and Giribala Behera were declared champions in the 42nd athletic meet of the varsity that concluded last week. Ashok Kumar Panigrahi, chairman of the university’s postgraduate council, inaugurated the meet that consisted of events such as short and long sprints, high jump, long jump, javelin throw, shot put throw, discus throw and musical chair. About 25 successful athletes were also awarded. With an aim to encourage the tribal students of the state, the Birsa Munda students’ union organised a festival, Mage Porob, in the city on February 16 where various cultural and sports activities took place in form of competition among the tribal students. The festival was organised at a city-based club of the union. More than 1,000 tribal students gathered at the venue to take part in the festival, of which 300 took part in various competitions. A traditional dance competition, Susun Durang Badabadi, was the main attraction of the day.
