Bhubaneswar: Khandagiri police on Thursday detained two youths after the family members of a higher secondary student brought murder charges against them. The student drowned in a pond at Patrapada on Thursday. The deceased, Sukant Sethi, 19, was a Plus Two student in Rajdhani College. He was the resident of Dumduma.

Rebels give in

Berhampur: Two Maoists — Dedi alias Samsun Mallick, 25, who was a personal assistant of Sabyasachi Panda, and Arun, 22 — surrendered before Ganjam police superintendent Asish Singh at Chatrapur on Thursday. Both of them joined the Maoist movement in 2008 and were allegedly involved in many illegal activities.

Sports stipend

Bhubaneswar: The state government on Thursday hiked the stipend for sportspersons of all the sports hostels and centres of excellence across Odisha. While the daily food allowance for sports hostels has been hiked to Rs 125 from Rs 100, it has been raised to Rs 150 from Rs 125 everyday for sports persons of the various centres of excellence. The hikes will be effective from December 1.
