Bhubaneswar: A mild earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale hit Angul district on Wednesday morning. However, there was no loss of life or property. Met officials said the earthquake occurred at 10.45am with its epicentre at latitude 20.7 degree north and longitude 85.1 degree east in Angul. Bhubaneswar: The two-day visit of All India Congress Committee vice-president Rahul Gandhi that concluded on Tuesday has galvanised party cadres in the state. Senior party leaders said that workers all over the state, and not in just the areas visited by Rahul, were enthusiastic over the prospects of the party in the coming elections. His visit will also help deal with the problem of factionalism by bringing the warring factions together, said the leaders. Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Power Generation Corporation Banharpali Unit-II in Jharsuguda district on Wednesday developed a snag and power generation was disrupted. This is not the first instance of the power unit running into trouble. Sources said the recurring problem of the power stations could make an impact on the state’s power production. Bhubaneswar: The state government on Wednesday announced a new grant-in-aid policy for block grant category of schools. The new policy will be effective from April 1, said school and mass education minister Rabi Narayan Nanda. The news has come as a respite to the nearly 35,000 teaching and non-teaching staff from 1,982 block grant schools and 327 eligible high schools who had been agitating for the past four years for abolition of block grant system and provision of 100 per cent grant-in-aid on par with the fully-aided high schools of the state. Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Anatomy Amendment Bill was passed in the state Assembly on Wednesday. This will facilitate family members of a deceased to donate the body for medical and research purposes. Under this, one can also include in his will the wish to donate his body for such purposes. Bhubaneswar: A police constable deployed at Biju Patnaik State Police Academy in Ranasinghapur on the city outskirts on Wednesday attacked his two daughters, aged five and two, with sharp weapons before injuring himself. Officials said the 36-year-old constable Laxmidhar Sahu attacked the girls following a quarrel with his wife. Police rushed the three to a private hospital in Chandrasekharpur area. Khandagiri police are probing the matter. Bhubaneswar: The Odisha state election commissioner has called for an all-party meeting on February 28 to discuss various modalities relating to the polls likely to be held in middle of this year.
