Fee hike cry in courses

Bhubaneswar: Authorities of accredited private engineering colleges of the state have urged the state government to allow them to raise their annual course fee to Rs 1.20 lakh for BTech courses on par with the fee structure of the government-run International Institute of Information Technology here.

At present, they are charging Rs 45,000 to Rs 68,000. They said the Odisha Professional education Act, 2007, provides for a fee hike once in three years. The last time the fee had been revised in 2010.

Robbery

Bhubaneswar: Around 15 armed dacoits on Wednesday robbed passengers of Umerkote-bound bus from Cuttack, of their cash and gold ornaments. The incident occurred in the Tumudibandh police station area in Kandhamal district.

Cheating

Bhubaneswar: A total of 874 students, including 480 regular students, were booked for malpractice on day five of the matric exams on Wednesday. In regular category, about 49 students were booked in Mayurbhanj.

Of the 394 ex-regular students, 51 students were booked in Sundergarh. Matric exam started on February 25 at 2,500 centres.

Shot dead

Bhubaneswar: A youth was shot dead on Tuesday night at Raibagi in Rourkela. The deceased was identified as Ranjit Jojo of Malgodown in Rourkela. Police suspect the involvement of Maoists. The cops seized a bike, pistol and some fired as well as live bullets from the spot.

Combing Op

Bhubaneswar: Security agencies on Wednesday seized 117 gelatine sticks, three Chinese grenade, 22 packets of liquid explosives and a clamour mine during a combing operation in Pandamal jungle in Narayanpatna. The district police and the Border Security Force were conducting the joint operation.

Cease work

Bhubaneswar: Home guards threatened to cease work from March 13 and launch a strike against illegal retrenchment by police. They have been protesting against illegal action against them since March 1, wearing black badges on their wrists.

They said that after they had started the symbolic protest, around 30 of them were retrenched from duty to create fear among other home guards. They had given memorandums with six-charter demands to senior officials and chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

Children sick

Bhubaneswar: At least 40 children studying in Gothgaon project upper primary school in Aska fell ill after having their mid-day meal on Wednesday.

The students were immediately rushed to nearby Hinjili, Seragada and Arapalli hospitals. Following the incident, tension gripped the area as angry parents locked the school.
